Qualcomm Sues Ericsson For Patent Infringement

SAN DIEGO -- Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) sued Ericsson Telephone Co. (ERICY) for patent infringement based on Ericsson's statement that it intends to offer code division multiple access handsets for sale in U.S. cellular markets within months.
In a press release Friday, Qualcomm said the lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Diego, alleges Ericsson infringed seven patents which cover ''essential features'' of the handsets.
Qualcomm said an Ericsson company is a licensee under Qualcomm's patents for the manufacture of handsets for use in the Globalstar satellite communications system, but Ericsson has not been granted a license by Qualcomm for cellular, PCS or other terrestrial applications.
Ericsson, Stockholm, is a telecommunications company.
