I think mining under the lake will not be a significant problem as far as cost but more so in terms of mining rate - it will slow them down. RT says the cost of a 3000tpd plant would be 150 million. An open pit mine requires lots of equipment as well, so I don't think the transportation costs are such a big issue. I was hoping the North Shore wasn't quite so deep down though, I would have liked to see an open pit operation there - but that looks unlikely as they'll probably have to go underground. What I do hope however, is they can define the North limit of the dyke and hopefully it will dip back up towards the surface so they can mine the deposit from both ends and meet in the middle sometime in the middle of the next century. This would double the mining rate and make things a whole lot more attractive.
