OK John, but fwiw I think the NYT got that cisco/ariba thing wrong - or, as hard as this is to fathom, you misunderstood. <gg>

Cisco is an Ariba customer and they don't do core technology software development, I'm fairly certain of this, since I have tons of friends there. They might have some new initiatives but it is way out of scope for them. They have a robust ERP/SCM/ORM (Ariba is ORM) implementation schedule to reduce their own infrastructure costs.

BTW - on software, despite being a sort of hybrid software/ecommerce company it is unclear to me that ariba will prevail at what they do... I am seeing pure web companies like employease popping up that basically outsource peoplesoft technology to the web - customers pay a sort of commission and poof they are online. With ariba, you have to buy the software and implement. There is no all web outsourced purchasing module that does what ariba does but thats the future imo. I really believe it was the internet and not y2k that killed software, I know you and I don't agree on this.
