I'll start Trader C, perhaps someone will step in and help.
If you have a vacant PCI slot in each of your computers then you would need 2 Network Cards PCI. Then you would have connections up to 100mb transfer. If you don't have a PCI slot but have a ISA slot you could only have 10Bt, meaning 10 MB transfer rate. You can use one of either in computer.
buy.com, these cards are 11.95 ea.
will work at 10bt or 100bt2. They are PCI. Very good price.

You will need a HUB between the computers with a cable from each computer to hub. If you will be adding more computers in future then this the way to go. Very spendy. Let's go the Cheap-o, route for now and add the Hub later.

buy.com, this cross-over cable will do the same thing. Has J-45 connectors (8 wire)in each end to plug into the NIC cards. Check out the 3rd from top ($5.65). It works with both 100base-tx or 10bt. However it's only 7 meters long. Will this be too short? If so will need a longer crossover or 2 with a connector.

sygate.com, after installing the 2 cards, go here and download Sygate ver 3.0 to connect the two. Sygate is free until you transfer 100mb files between the 2 computers then you will have to register for $39.00 for a license if you like the program. Another program is wingate.com that is a tad harder to work with and you pay the $39.00 up front.

Once you download the program and install it, 1 computer will be the Server, other will be Client. You will name each computer with a different name. Can be anything, mine are 486 and 300.

Your modem will be on the Server. It can be running one thing and you can connect with another web site with Client computer thru the Server. You may have a modem in each computer but you cannot access the ISP with both at the same time. If server is connected and you try the modem on Client you will get a busy signal. You can read files each way from other computer. For a total of 29.95 plus shipping you are connected for the first 100MB of transfer. Then the $39.00 kicks in.

Pretty good detail instructions comes with the sygate download to connect the two. I'm a little thick headed and needed a little help. Am sure others on this thread will gladly kick in when you get all the components connected.

Sorry to be so long winded, hope this helps.

Regards, /jw
