Web Users Bypassing Portals for Specialty Sites, USA Today Says

Bloomberg News
July 2, 1999, 5:24 a.m. PT
Washington, July 2 (Bloomberg) -- More Internet users are
heading straight to specialty Web sites, bypassing Internet
portals such as Lycos and Excite, USA Today said, citing data
from Nielsen/NetRatings. Though use of the Internet grew last
month, visits to portals remained at about the same level as the
month before and increased by only 5 percent from March to May,
compared to double-digit growth a year ago, USA Today reported.
The shift may mean that portals -- which command the most
advertising because their audiences are largest -- will lose
advertising money to specialty sites focusing on topics like
education, sex and finance, the newspaper said, citing analysts.
