My mother was the proverbial "can't boil water" cook when she married. My father taught her how. She cooked many, many meals for a family of six over the years, with my dad specializes in Saturday breakfast. (he really liked getting my oldest sister up to eat an early morning meal when he knew she was hungover). Now that they are retired she considers cooking to be something she is retired from, though she cooks most the dinners and does my dad's lunches when he comes in from the fields. She keeps it simple mostly. My dad is the one that has taken to baking pastries, pies, and such from scratch and cooking many course meals. He loves it. And he built a marble thing into the kitchen for doing dough and whatnot on. He likes that marble. It's dangerous to the bank account to send him to a store with neat cooking accessories.
