The DAC in the CD player has a great deal to do with this. I first noticed this after playing audio CD's using a DVD player and it's s/pdif output instead of the analog. The DAC's in computer CD-roms and sound cards are really bad. I just hooked the digital audio out from my cd-rom to a Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theater 5.1 amp. The difference is amazing. I'm now looking for a sound card that does s/pdif I/O.
