I would agree with you about the Jerry Springer show and the other really gross examples of popular culture, Achilles. I have taken just a tiny peek at these on occasion when I am feeling down, for the purposes of entertainment and regaining the smug superiority that I try not to show but usually carry on the inside, like most somewhat elitist intellectual sorts of people do. However, being so far removed from mass culture, I have no idea just how many Americans conduct their lives that way. And why on earth they would then want to come on television and tell us all about it!! I must say that I am not overly concerned about not 'getting any', but of course I am female, and so I don't think about sex a thousand times a day. And I have found absolutely none of the people I have ever seen on those shows to be sexually appealing.
