Dear Merritt: I grew up in Florida and was a teenager when Castro took over. I spoke a little Spanish so was involved with the initial Cuban Refugees. I know we all were for Castro in the beginning until he showed up in Moscow, but truth is, he took away the most important thing of all from the Cuban people--FREEDOM. Yes, he has instituted major education reforms, and I believe he has done the best he could under the circumstances with Health Care for the people but he also gives them little say in their lives. His second in command Che went throughout South and Central America trying to foment Revolution etc etc. Under the circumstances I dont see where we had any choice but to try and isolate that government, although I admit it was the worst thing probably for the people.
As to Batista, I dont think he was that nasty, he was just a crook basically controlled by the Mafia. Actually the people had relative freedom under his regime. JDN
