EmuGreg, re: "Also, does anyone have any insight as to why the original company (Genetech?) gave the technology away?" Genentech hardly gave away the technology. They still own 14% of VAXGEN after the IPO and have exclusive manufacturing rights of the vaccine. I'm guessing they spun this out to get the losses off their current operating results and also to better motivate the developers. Or maybe the developers made this decision for them.
