Got it: NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., March 21 (Reuter) - Gateway 2000 Inc said Friday it expects to begin shipping in April desktop computers featuring modems with x2 Technology made by U.S. Robotics.
"We expect rapid customer adoption of x2 Technology because our direct business model enables us to offer x2 without charging a price premium," said Dave Berger, Gateway director of product marketing - Americas.
"Gateway 2000 is an important and strategic customer for U.S. Robotics, and its support of x2 Technology is a strong endorsement." said Michael Seedman, vice president and general manager, U.S. Robotics Personal Communications Division.
The U.S. Robotics x2 Technology allows Internet users to download information at up to 56 kilobits per second, or about twice as fast as the today's typical modems used over a standard telephone network.
There are still no standards for 56-K technology, so in order to reach download speeds users must be connected to online service providers using compatible equipment. U.S. Robotics rivals Rockwell International Corp , Lucent Technologies Inc and Motorola Inc , among others, are in an alliance to support competing technology.
In 1996, Gateway shipped 1.9 million systems and reported revenues of $5 billion. |
