Just a bit of history on diesel engines. Duel fuel is nothing new. Years ago there were makes and models of diesel engines that used both diesel fuel and gas. The purpose at that time was in extremely cold weather and the structure of the engine was quite different. It was not a duel fuel as we know it now. The purpose of using gas was for starting in cold weather as I mentioned and how it worked was by using a manually operated valve system which when opened would increase the cylinder area thereby increasing the area of the cylinder and giving a compression ratio that was suitable for using gas. Just like the compression ratio of an average gas engine. In these engines a spark plug was added to ignite the gas. This was used on start up of the engine and when it came up to an operating temp suitable for operation in the diesel fuel mode it would be switch over to diesel by manually closing the valve to revert the engine back to the diesel conpression ratio. This of course is not useful information for present purposes, just something to stick in ones vast store of useless information. Actually, we used to start conventional diesel engines in cold weather by injecting ether into the intake. The reason being that when diesels are started in cold weather the compression ratio drops off and it is the high compression ratio that provides the heat required to ignite the diesel fuel. Ether, having a higher flash point gave that extra heat required to run the engine with diesel fuel. End of lesson, if it means anything.
