Actually, Christine, in Greek, "nemesis" means "retribution," and the word comes to us via the Greek goddess, Nemesis, the goddess of revenge. Thus, its primary meaning, in English, is "avenger," someone who "inflicts relentless vengeance or destruction" (American Heritage Dictionary). A secondary meaning is "an unbeatable rival." If you were indeed so confident of being able to hold your own in an argument, then you would never be inclined to view an opponent as a "nemesis."
