Lucius -Re: "http://www.economist.com/editorial/freeforall/current/wb9828.html"

The basic premise of that article - like a thousand articles written since 1996 and the advent of the Thin Client/PC Killer was that NOBODY NEEDS THE EXTRA HORSEPOWER of the new CPUs and PCs.

Let me recall - in 1996 - when everybody STOPPED NEEDING this new CPU power - Intel was shipping 166 and 200 MHz Pentiums.

Two months ago, NSM effectively SHUT DOWN Cyrix because ALL THEY COULD PRODUCE was 200 MHz CPUs and the COULDN't KEEP UP with Intel or AMD.

AMD reported a $128 million loss in the first quarter BEACAUSE THEY COULD NOT MAKE ENOUGH 400 MHz CPUS !

AMD will report a loss of $200 MILLION for the second quarter because INTEL WAS SELLING >400 MHz CPUs including 450, 500 and 550 MHz CPUs !

Again, in 1996 when the need for new computers ALSO came to an end, the industry sold about 50 to 60 million PCs. This year, when once again the need for new computers has COME TO AN END, about 110 million new PCs will be sold.

Somehow, the reality does not fit the opinions in that article.

Maybe all authors of such doomsday PC predictions should be made to go back and explain why such PRIOR PREDICTIONS have been CONSISTENTLY WRONG.
