He is confused because he does not understand English. Cat's communicate mostly by mental telepathy (with each other, that is). Some humans are more sensitive to cat's brain waves and thus understand them better. Some cats are sensitive to human brain waves and seem to understand them better too.
It is a little known fact that because cats communicate telepathically, and therefore at the speed of light, their words are very long when transcribed to English. I know an amazing cat whose name (in English) is Peaches. It takes about 14 pages (single spaced, Times New Roman, 10 point font) to type his name in cat language. This is also why it is so difficult for most humans and most cats to communicate...the languages just are not compatible.
I have a dog, Shadow Dogus the Wonder Dog, and a bunch of birds (Gouldian and Zebra Finches, Cockatiels, a Red Lory). Shadow is telepathic, but dog language is more like human language (shorter words spoken at normal speeds) and so he and I communicate really well. The Cockatiels and the Lory speak English so well they correct my grammar, (but their spelling is terrible -- they love to type, but I think it's only because I type so much).
None of my pets have brought me a dead cat as a trophy.
