You are correct about the bed sharing and the reason for it. Entire families shared a single bed (actually a double bed). Travelers were expected to share a room or beds with strangers. Thus the traveling salesmen stories -- or the traveling Cambridge clerks stories -- as in the Reeve's tale.
It has always been a standing joke that people forced by circumstances to share a bed often ended up engaged in sexual activity. Strange bedfellows indeed. I remember Judge Powell of Georgia recommending a classmate for a job at Columbia university. He wrote: "he was a badfellow at Mercer." He later admitted that he meant "bed fellow."
