People just don't realize what a fantastic thing the Railroad was.

From what I've read, the railroads were so important to business that they brought on one of the few examples in history of beneficial deflation. Railroads lowered cost of delivery and increased the size of the penetrable markets by expanding geographic coverage.

As a result, prices dropped. But the costs dropped too. That and the increased markets allowed businesses to sell at lower prices and at the same time make more money.

Some people are suggesting that the Internet has the potential to have the same impact as railroads, including beneficial deflation.
