thanks for the reply. i intend to go back into the default settings on various scans and check their frequency, as you suggested.
in the meantime, this continuous scanning situation corrected itself after leaving the puter turned off for a day, and after having installed systemworks on an upgrade from just nu4.0. believe me, i'd love to be able to say that things got better because i did this or that, but i'd be making something up if i did! <g3>
the whole process of troubleshooting a problem always turns out beneficial for me, though. i always come away knowing a little more than when i started. like finding this little item... #reply-10377981 .
had the "restarting" problem not fixed itself, i was going to look hard at a program called 'findfast', part of microsoft office, as the culprit. a symantec knowledge base article identified it as one of several programs that are known to cause restarts, and it is part of the start up folder on my wife's computer (the one having the difficulty) and it does NOT load on start up on my pc (the one running okay).
all things said, i have to vote high marks for the symantec online help site. i didn't even have to get to the part where i post a question for one of their techs to respond to. that's a nice feature in itself.
still more tweaking to do with norton options, but all is running sweet once again!
