Actually, Pd is not the only one, most of the hydride forming 3d, 4d and 4f elements should do. I personally think that Ti would be better, but I am not involved with cold fusion personally, I only have some voluminous notes on what they are doing wrong (VBG). But, who is asking me????

As for helium, the quantities produced (and its ability to leak through almost anything) are so small that it is not detectable, or at least much more difficult to detect than "those thermal" or other more energetic neutrons.
