A friend of mine recently bought and IBM Aptiva computer(against my advice). He uses it to communicate with CNC machine tools via the serial port, He knows nothing about computers and asked me to help.
After many hours of failure I concluded the serial port didn't work
I attempted to install a new port but the machine refused to accept it. We took it back to CompUSA where they kept it for a week and pronounced it well.
After many more hours of failure I discovered that wiggling serial port a certain made a connection. We took it back to CompUSA and explained this to the repair tech.
He said it needed a new motherboard. This took a week and the machine works OK now.
My friend paid $999 for the computer and got a $100 rebate.
CompUSA billed IBM $409 for the repair. If this is a common experience for Aptiva buyers IBM won't be in the PC business for long
