JG - It is only the way in which phone looks for and identifies the signal that MIGHT be patentable. I agree, and that is pretty explicitly not included in the GTE patent. Their patent is a very verbose description of a seven block flow chart, of which two blocks are I/O. To repeat, in all seriousness, you would have to be brain dead not to come up with the same logic chart in ten minutes given the then-extant knowledge of the cell technology. My guess is that GTE is in negotiations with Qualcomm for something (handsets?) and wanted some additional leverage. They probably know they can't win (it's possible they are so stupid they don't understand, but that is hard to fathom), but there is still the monetary threat of wasted legal fees. Of course they are wasting the same fees and substantial ill will. (Remember the guy in Blazing Saddles -'Back off or the n***er gets it.') Clark
