Is AOL an ISP or is it not? If not, then what is it?

Of course its not, don't be silly. It's the largest (..........) BBS in the Universe. And nothing more. Just like the Wizard of OZ, Steve Case would like to have us believe (now that's an interesting word, isn't it, boys and girls?) that AOL is a service provider. Well, I take exception to that belief system, it's a 20th century religion. Since most religions succeed, you do the math.

But puhleeeeze, an ISP??? What does AOL have to do with the Internet?

Just wondering, Ray
