If you are pursuing some CG questions today, you might ask if the
Motorola availability dates are for "first silicon" or debugged
chips. Generally, when an IC manufacturer pre-announces a chip, the
date they give is for the date when the first version of the chip
is available ("first silicon"). No matter how good your designers
are and how many simulations they have run, there are almost always
problems (major and minor) with chips in first silicon. Discovering
and addressing these problems can be extremely time consuming. A
DMT modem chip is an extremely complex device (I'd guess that it's
between 2-3 million transistors), so the chance of fully functional
first silicon is probably pretty slim. It may well be that first
silicon has already been received and that the new Motorola dates
are for debugged chips. It would be interesting to know, but is a
very touchy subject with IC vendors, who tend to proclaim that they
have "100% first silicon success".

Good Luck!
