Re: Shorting SUNW

Bad idea, and not necessary. There's ample room for both SUNW and Wintel to prosper for many years going forward as the net and e-commerce continue their frantic buildouts. There may ultimately come a "crunch" for SUNW but it will not be for zero-sum reasons. In addition, there is always the risk of takeovers and consolidation. Combinations that might be unthinkable today may not be so unthinkable a few years down the road. Look at the telecom world for a glimpse of the sort of mating dances that may be in store on the computing side before long. NSCP clearly wasn't going to make it on its own but that did not stop AOL from buying it. I fully expect SUNW will be taken out at some point for the same reason. By whom? Hard to say, though one could make a case for IBM, AOL, or even INTC. Remember, for all of its public Wintel-bashing, SUNW has been quietly preparing to make Solaris available on Merced and its follow-ons.

Of course, the nimble trader can profitably short SUNW, MSFT, or any company as a tactical opportunity since dips and corrections are inevitable. But those looking for "terminal shorts" should look elsewhere.
