The reason why shooting is not important is because dunking is. It's not defense. While many people will argue that defense is the reason for such low scoring games, don't be fooled.

There two reasons:

1) Dunking. Why are free-throw % so low if it's defense? The answer is that defense is not the reason. Kids these days like to dunk or at least drive towards the basket.

3) The Three-Point line. Shooters are taking farther shots than ever before. Also take a look at a game sometime and notice how many players are just standing around at the 3-point line waiting for the ball to come to them. This sure makes it a whole lot easier to defend them. The offense has become stagnant. It's not that the defense has improved.
