John, you're buying into the folkloric prejudice that monarchs, unlike democratic leaders, loved wars. The Habsburgs abdicated without firing a shot. If they had behaved like their democratically elected successors, they would have massacred their own people by the thousand lot. For them to fire on their own people was unthinkable.

I know that this thread is not the place to debate the virtues of monarchy, but there is a direct line of events which began in 1917 and is still being played out. After Wilson and his British cohorts got rid of the hated Catholic monarchy is when the lights went out in Europe. The way was paved to try the various "isms" which have proved this century to be the most brutal in history. Governments have killed their own people in this century like in no other.

Now Slobo ain't no Habsburg, he is most of those things his enemies say he is. But one thing he doesn't do is go hat in hand to the IMF, which the west cannot tolerate. He is an intransigent nationalist who does not grovel for money, therefore he is unacceptable. I find this messianic democracy very unsettling. Yours, Charles
