BOOST TO INFORMATION SOCIETY AS BT SIGNS UP
SUPPLIERS FOR ADSL

The information society in the UK came a step closer today as BT agreed a multi-million pound order for ADSL equipment. It will enable ordinary telephone lines to be transformed into high speed digital channels to the Internet and multi-media services at up to 10 times the speed achieved across normal telephone lines.

This is the next step in BT's previously-announced £5 billion investment programme to revolutionise communications and e-commerce. The orders, placed with BT's strategic suppliers Fujitsu and Alcatel, start with equipment to be supplied between now and next spring to the first 400 exchanges around the UK, covering nearly six million households and businesses.

Sir Peter Bonfield, BT's chief executive, said: "We want the UK to be a world leader in the information revolution, and our roll-out programme, which we will announce shortly, will be very aggressive by international standards.

"BT intends to be at the heart of the information society, making it possible for a wide range of independent service providers to connect their customers over our world class networks. BT will play a vital part in stimulating the new information industries of the future, and the placing of these orders is the next step along this road."
