1) Does cable modem, packaged with other cable services, really provide better deal for consumer as most of us here believe? If the answer is no, then why are we holding toilet paper such as ATHM? I don't have DSL available in my area, but the confrontation has started in Bay Area, and that will be fun to watch.
Assume DSL garners greater market share. At what number of users does the internet slow down to a crawl for everyone.
ATHM designed their network architecture so that data access speeds could (in theory) be scalable to any number of users. They have had two years to tweak their system design - no other ISP has ATHM's experience. In august ATHM begins to use AT&T's new backbone, which consists of 2 OC-48 fiber optic lines capable of 2.5 gbs each, we should soon see the value of the RDC's and caching computers.
In a choice between DSL and Cable, in the Bay Area, I have the feeling that DSL will have higher demand. Although on the peninsula most of the copper lines are old and optimized for analog voice quality, so it may come down to which service is available.
I know your joking but ATHM stock value will never approach that of toilet paper because at the very least they're still providing @Work services to 2200 businesses (as of Mar 31; up 30% from Dec 31, 98).
