NBA defense has not changed since the advent of the 3-point line in 1981 (??). I used to watch the Celtics all the time. Kevin McHale would always get doubled or tripled team. Same goes with Kareem or any other NBA low post player in the 1980's.

Finally, if NBA values defense so much and they draft players who can defend, answer this:

Why wasn't Ricky Moore drafted? He was perhaps the best all-around defender in this country, and he could certainly score when he wanted to.

The fact of the matter is: The NBA stresses offense. Look how the game is different than the college game. In almost all areas it's favored towards a faster, high offense game: No zones, 24 second shot clock, no 5-second rule... Yet when you have kids coming out from high-school or one or two years of college, they just haven't mastered to art of shooting the ball because they were always so much quicker or taller than their opponent. Take a look at Jordan. He's perhaps the greatest player ever because he was able to adapt his game. Jordan ended his career as a very good outsider shooter, yet entered the league as a one dimensional high-flyer.
