Is AOL an ISP or is it not? If not, then what is it?

Maybe a new category should be created for AOL, eh? Since Network Service Provider was used for AOL's pre-internet incarnation, it doesn't fit its current service which also provides most of the tools expected from an ISP.

How about Network Gateway Provider. AOL is something other than an ISP because it requires its users to interact with a proprietary gateway through which the user can access both AOL's own network and most parts of the internet. The redundant software that AOL makes its users install is designed to control the user's experience of the internet and to direct the user to resources controlled by AOL.
