Maybe they aren't a gateway, but a gatekeeper.

That's it! That's even the word that I should have been searching for. The statement came not from Case, but from one of his lobbying outfits:

"As new broadband technologies emerge to make the online
experience faster, richer and more convenient, the cable industry is trying to use its monopoly control of the broadband cable wire to become a gatekeeper on the Internet," the OpenNet Coalition said in a statement.

Since AOL is closer to being a gatekeeper than anyone else -- even Roadrunner or ATHM -- it seems they should embrace the term.

So I hereby formally change my suggestion from "Network Gateway Provider" to "Network Gatekeeper" (and apologize to the thread for messing it up to begin with).
