Yes. It's pretty rewarding to spend time learning Unix and open standards computing. The analogy of Windows being like having a car with the hood welded shut is quite apt.

What you miss though, is that the M$ PC "end user" doesn't exist in a similar context in the *nix universe. You're applying the M$ self administrating PC end user context (BS) to multiuser Unix. Unix Sys Admins would prefer those ASCII config files if for no other reason than remote admin. Remote admin for Windows is more along the lines of telling the end user over the telephone to reboot.

If a Windows PC is like a car with the hood welded shut, Unix is like public transportation. I think you GREATLY overstate the want of all of we ubiquitous PC users to plod happily along as PC end users (and especially Windows PC users). After 10 years of Mr Toads Wild Wintel ride, I for one have absolutely no plans to purchase another PC. Furthermore, I don't know anyone who doesn't have a PC that plans on getting one in the future. The vast majority of PC users would gladly replace their local storage monster with high network bandwidth. I'm one.
