Nowadays, no one is left open

Huh??? Are you watching the same games as I? I see so many wide open shots being taken in the NBA game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but somebody has to be open when a double team occurs. You seem to saying that a double team can occur AND all players are being guarded at the same time. Sorry but this just can't happen especially given that so many players stand outside the 3-point line now (I will say that a lot of these shooters stand around too much; thus making them easier to defend. But that should go into "poor shooter/offense" category). If you have a low post player who can pass and several players who can shoot the 18-22' shot, the defensive team will pay dearly.

Somehow I knew you were going to mention the Pistons. The Pistons played very physical defense, yet their defense is really no different than other teams (if you ignore the cheap shots by Bill Laimbeer and Rodman).

...understand how to thwart the illegal defense rules and play a zone. Now, every single team in the league does it

What's the best way to defeat a zone? You got it: Good outside shooting. I guess you just proved my point. Teams have decided to go to the "zone" because good shooters are hard to find these days.
