Thanks for the information. The following Email from our largest local provider is interesting regarding the attitude of the smaller ISP's who in time will be dead and replaced by the cable or RBOC unless they change their attitude.

The New 56K (X2) Modem Technology

The new USR 56K modem specification is an attempt by USR to force their own
structure upon the modem industry. There is a second structure proposed by
Rockwell/Lucent Technologies. These and at least one other are competing
technologies and are completely NON compatible.

This means that chosing any single one of these will require an update when
the industry finally agrees upon a standard. Because of this significant
problem and the many thousands of telephone lines involved UltraNet will NOT
be supporting any proprietary technology except for some very limited local
testing with some vendors.

UltraNet WILL be supporting the eventual standard when it becomes available.
This is not expected to happen in the near future. It is likely to be a
year or more before we see significant agreement among the vendors on a
specific technology.

We regret this attempt by the vendors to force any of the proprietary
technologies upon the modem-user community. Please consider that for any
extra monies you expend now you will eventually be required to "upgrade" to
the standard. Most modem manufacturers will require more money for this
upgrade. USR is notorious for this cost to the user; remember V.FC. Not
many people were upgraded to V.34 for free!

In short, don't waste your money on X2 technology until it carries an
industry standard nominclature on it similar to V.34. All you will get for
speed is the current standard eg. V.34+ which is 33.6K.

Everyone should realize that at least ONE end of any 56K circuit MUST be
connected to "Ma Bell" via a DIGITAL connection. It will NOT work with both
ends on standard analog telephone lines. Most ISP's (including UltraNet)
have mostly analog telephone lines. For 56K to work at all will require
that these lines be "upgraded" by NYNEX or the dial-tone supplier to a
digital line, a very expnesive proposition.

None of this will be done quickly since it involves NYNEX to do the work.
There is a very long lead for such changes to telephone service.

I hope this has helped to clear the air on the claimed "56K" wonderful speeds.
