Seattle ABC Television Affiliate Relies On Ampex DST Archive System for Commercial Backup
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--Ampex Data Systems Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ampex Corporation (AMEX:AXC), today announced the sale of a DST(R) 312 digital tape drive to the Seattle/Portland ABC affiliates, KOMO and KATU operated by Fisher Broadcasting.
The Ampex DST 312 digital tape purchase is just the beginning of Fisher Broadcasting's total storage solution and will initially be used for backup of commercial material.
As one of the first steps in finding a replacement for its legacy commercial playback system, Fisher selected two Tektronix Profile(R) video servers for playout and the Ampex DST 312 digital tape drive to archive commercial material and free up space on the video servers. KOMO selected the Ampex DST 312 digital tape drive based on speed and tested compatibility with Tektronix Profile video servers connected in a Fibre Channel network.
"During our research for a solution on tape backup technology we found consistently higher access speeds with the Ampex DST system," said Don Meyer, senior research and development technologist for Fisher Broadcasting.
"Based on overall performance and storage efficiencies, Ampex DST systems are becoming the de-facto digital archive choice for a number of stations making the transition to digital playout," stated John Hennessy, director of video and broadcast marketing of Ampex Data Systems. "KOMO's archival storage needs are an ideal match for the high-performance characteristics of Ampex DST systems. We are thrilled to work with another major ABC network affiliate, and will continue to support Fisher Broadcasting's growing needs."
Ampex DST Product Line
Ampex DST digital archive systems are ideal for a variety of data-intensive applications. These applications include archive and retrieval of video and images in the broadcast and post-production environments, data warehousing, backup and restore of very large databases (VLDB), hierarchical storage management (HSM), or network file systems and high bandwidth data acquisition. The company's innovative technology reduces the cost of storage to pennies per megabyte, simplifies media management and lowers overhead by reducing the need to track and house large numbers of cartridges. The storage density increase also improves file access time, as well as backup and restore speeds, by minimizing cartridge exchanges.
