Puna that Wailia Grande place is really a rip...I just checked their prices and its about twice what I paid when I stayed there....new owners I guess need to recoup buy price although I can't believe they could fill all those rooms at those prices....I will check out the place next door to see if that is still an option and then there are those kamaini rates...what do you need to get those again I forget...was it a Hawaii license or what? Day 4 trip to Hana wet side of Maui...for those who decide to do this trek and it is a trek and a very worthwhile one I would be sure to include the following: 1. once you actually get to Hana check out the little bay..there is this mountain to your right... then go around to the south end of town...there is a little store there....park get a drink and then go across the street over the fence and through the field toward the south side of the mountain.....eventually you see a path follow it...you'll pass an old Japanese cemetery check it out...then keep following the path around the mountain...you'll be on some pretty scary ledges here so not for the faint of heart but continue on you can do it......you'll come to this incredible beach where the red lava rock has caved in off the face of the mountain forming a red sand beach...the water is very rough on this side of the island but not on this beach because there are some shear rock sheets about 200 feet from the shore line...the waves break over them with beautiful sprays and form a little lagoon on the other side...get there early for best chance at a sunny sky but even if its raining do this hike it is well worth it. After you come back there are some side roads just past here that lead to some black sand beaches..you might check them out 2. continue on to seven sacred pools.....most people just look from the road but you need to do more...just to the south there is a field to your right park there and hike up the hill about a mile then take the path along the water..it leads to the top end of a pretty big water fall...walk all the way in so you can get right to the edge...there is a pretty good pond up there if you want to take a swim but lots of mosquitoes 3. continue on to your south past the sign where it says no more rental cars...its ok I give you my personal permission....the road turns to dirt but still pretty good....from here you'll have to follow your nose some...there are great deserted beaches as the road begin to turn back toward the west...the best are about 15 minutes after the road turns to dirt...great place for skinny dipping....going home just continue on as the road goes up you connect back into the high road.....there is probably now a good connector to Kihae but if your staying down that way you might have to detour through the cane fields..ask the locals how to do it....but as I recommended the thing to do since your already over this side is just keep going around and check into the Kula Lodge..hey not that far from the Makawoo Steak House Mr X told us about.
