DS, the best explanation I've seen of why fibre channel's spelling is fibre is because the media used to transmit the protocol can be either copper or fiber optics (or anything else that's fast enough, I suppose). The standards group that named it wanted to get the message out that it wasn't restricted to the use of fiber optic cable only.
