SYMC has been trying to transition from selling software outright to selling software with a maintenance fee. Systemworks which includes virtually everything that SYMC makes (AV, NU, Cleansweep,Crashguard, etc.) is the first of a breed to be sold in this manner (if you don't count Norton AV). The software costs next to nothing but to keep it up to date, one has to subscribe to Norton Web Services for $29.95 a year. If you want just the bare minimum then you can update your AV definitions for $4.00 per year. This strategy allows SYMC to lock in customers (since they are unlikely to switch since all their utility needs are met) and guarantees a steady revenue of maintenance fees.

Please go to Symantec's web site and you can look up the various fees.
