I've kicked around the net security issue regarding DSL Vs cable and I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough on this subject to offer anything but an unqualified opinion.

I do know that the @Home security newsgroup is filled with accounts of attempted computer access. I understood this to be a problem inherent to the net (not just @Home's local loop) which is exacerbated by the static IP and the always on qualities of cable modem access. If these are the main security issues then in my judgement (see above qualifier) DSL should be just as likely to suffer from them.

The following recommendations are offered in the newsgroups for NT systems:

Change the default NT's workgroup name.
Turn of file sharing.
If you have a home LAN then use a firewall.

There are several software programs that are recommended for recording , tracing, and preventing unauthorized access to one's PC. I'm not sure how much of this is hype or reality.

This is a good general topic - I, for one, would like to hear opinions from network security experts.

P.S. RDC = Regional Data Center. We'll save AT&T's backbone specs for later; but as far as net infrastructure suppliers you might take a look at SDLI. Disclosure: I exited the stock several weeks ago.
