I think it has everything to do with giving one's better judgment over to a system rather than thinking for oneself and relying on one's own empathy as a guide- of course I am assuming these people have empathy but are blocked from using it by their belief system. I suppose it is equally possible that people who do not have any empathy, and who cannot formulate rules to live by on their own, must seek rigid value systems to believe in so they can order their universe. If this is the case then we will be forever witness to an ebb and flow of group and individual acts of violence - as the belief systems that shape these individuals ebb and flow. Some systems are bound to be more benign then others- look at the abortion protestors- from the amount of violence they have caused this is surely one of the more malignant strains.
