The point is that the PC desktop is about to collapse as a business: it's going to turn into a freebie with no margins regardless of volume, something that will be given away by various service providers. Microsoft's margins will dry up

The iron market will be cut throat with little margin on the traditional low end 1 processor PC's; I agree. There is no indication however that MSFT margins will be reduced. Vendors still need to pay MSFT for a Win98/2000 license for each PC; albeit at a volume discount no doubt as other vendors already have. The DOJ could not enforce price restrictions since other desktops licenses (such as Solaris) are much more expensive and less open and less user functional; isn't Solaris $500-800 or more for a destop OS license ?

It is true SUNW has to execute the Java desktop

This dream has been around for three years and I've yet to see something that could be targetted for home/office use ? Sun would be best spending the effort helping Linux and increasing cross-platform useability with Solaris rather than continue whipping the dead thin-client horse. Regarding MSFT R&D I'd put my dollars on them based on past challenges they've responded to quickly and with superior products; IE, MSFT JVM to name a couple. It also helps that they have more R&D dollars, the largest software team on the planet, and at least 1 generation lead on other desktops.

I respect your opinions too Qwik since your one of the few who respond without ranting and you have the odd good point as well !;)

All IMHO of course.

Cheers
James
