I believe they are closer to Nike than you might think. The old Iomega (Bernoulli days) were more like Hayes. Technological best at any cost. Computer peripherals designed by engineers for engineers. Hayes modems were never cheap or sexy, just the best and most reliable.

The new Iomega is really more of a consumer appliance company. They just happen to make appliances that are used in conjunction with computers. This is a company that is run by marketeers, not engineers.

How many computer peripheral companies have ever advertised on national TV? Radio? Print outside of computer magazines? Prior to Iomega, the only people who saw a peripheral advertisement were computer geeks perussing the back pages of Byte. Remember, prior to Nike, running shoes were only aimed at (and advertised to) fitness fanatics who read magazines like Runners World.

Does Iomega have as wide open of prospects as Nike? Well, almost everybody has a pair of feet that Nike's can go on to, but only about 1 in 3 households have a home computer that a Zip can go into.
