I agree with your main point about Iomega and Nike. But I have one quibble with this paragraph. Iomega's engineering is nothing to sneeze at. Many people look at the speeds and feeds comparison between the Syquest line and Iomega, and conclude that Iomega's technology is inferior.

I believe that the Iomega engineers design exactly what they set out to design in each case. The Zip is somewhat slower than its Syquest counterpart, but not dramatically so. Both the drive and the disks are reliable and easy to use. Moreover, it is a product which can be profitably manufactured at a retail price under 99 bucks. And it's important to give Iomega credit for creating a market where no one else saw one.

The Jaz also created a whole new product class. Bringing out a higher capacity competitor a year later is not a huge feat for Syquest.

Yes, Iomega's marketing is teriffic. But don't discount the engineering. It's the whole package that makes it work.
