Brian,
Dikes are rarely homogenous, but layering or banding can be relatively consistent over large distances. Kimberlites often display sorting or winnowing characteristics depending on the proximity to source feeders and various other effects during fluid emplacement.

I think the thickening of the dike(sill/lacolith/lopolith/whatever) is where the big stones will be found in future sampling.
