There will also be independent trials, sponsored by NICHD (the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development -- a part of the NIH). Note 10/16/98 entry at nih.gov
Last May, there was an announcement of an NICHD trial in the Seattle Times. One-third of the patients will get porcine secretin, one-third synthetic, one-third placebo.
"Fifty-one children will participate in a study at the UW's Center on Human Development and Disability, beginning late this summer. An equal number will be part of a test group at the University of Colorado........
Before the treatment, each child will be evaluated through behavioral observation, language testing and a review of records and observations made by parents and teachers. A month after treatment, the evaluations will be repeated to measure any differences.
Unis said the researchers hope to have test results in six months to a year. If they look promising, more extensive, long-term studies will follow, he said."
