Your Microsoft holding sounds like a perfect candidate for charitable contribution. It's all capital gains so you avoid paying taxes on it plus you can write off the entire amount against your AGI.

Thanks for the tip. I have no AGI as I retired a few years ago (in my early 40's). I do indeed make contributions, (in gratitude), to a few friends who stood by me back when I was down and out. Their kids college education will be covered (and then some).

Perceptive? No. More like pure blind luck! A tip from a friend who knew someone who worked at MSFT back then. My ex "broke"r (she was a real babe who I used to date, stupid me) tried to talk me out of it. I was a relative neophyte investor in those days and if I'd put the money that I wasted speculating in garbage penny stocks and limited partnerships into more MSFT instead, I'd be sitting on an eight figure portfolio. Live and learn... :-)
