first an advice on mainboards (I normally do hardware consulting).
The fastest mainboards to go right NOW for Cyrix M1/M2 and AMD K5 & K6 (and Intel Pentiums by the way) are the ones with Intel TX chipset. There's a new mainboard (one with baby AT and one with ATX form factor) from Aopen (Acer) and a new offering from Gigabyte based on Intel TX chipset design. Little secret: this mainboard goes up to 83 Mhz bus speed. (He he - although it's clear that Intel did'nt like this...)

The performance advantage relative of a TX solution relative to SIS-571 based mainboards are incredible. Let's give Intel credit where credit is true. The TX chipset definitely deserves this IMHO. From my own low-level benchmark experience (CTCM, Hurricane Benchmark, CPU Winmark 96 16&32 bit) even the solid Intel-TXC HX chipset performed about 10% faster than SIS-571 based solutions (with a 6x86 @ 166 Mhz) - both heavily optimized for performance. BTW this is also outlined by Tom's hardware page (don't know the exact link) but I'm sure You got it.

As to TOM, the TX let's You really use SDRAM at its full speed potential - unlike the ill fated VX boards - for the first time. So expect SDRAM to blow away EDO RAM based systems in a TX vs HX context.
