"Facts and Figures for the Chemical Industry" p. 63 from the June 28, 1999 edition (print) of Chemical and Engineering News reports the following:

U.S. Chemical trade
(% change, 1997-98)
exports...-2
imports....9

and a growing dependence on Europe as a trade partner.

(With 65% of key suppliers not reporting y2k "readiness" you have to wonder what DD was thinking when they decided not to stockpile supplies.)
