I agree completely, but I am slightly more optomistic that Mr. Greenspan, et al, won't be dumb enough to raise rates significantly. A 1/4 point would probably not hurt the economy or stock market too much, and would allow for more jawboning in the future to be taken seriously.

One other reason to not raise rates any more than the 1/4, if at all, is how high do they want the dollar to go, vis-a-vis, the yen or mark? I don't think they want the U.S. exports to dry up or the trade imbalance to get worse (beside all of the dangers you mentioned).
