Alf: Here's some "stuff" from an initial archeological dig, heh:

Here's some general info. on the nature of their DFED billboards:

Message 310320

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1996-- SI Diamond Technology Inc announced today the completion of its first scaleable proof-of-concept prototype for large area digitized billboards utilizing its proprietary diamond field emission lamp technology (DFEL).
The device is a 16-pixel structure that is matrix addressable in a time frame corresponding to that of the final product. The final billboard product is expected to include 320 by 240 color pixels operating at video rate.
"This represents a major milestone in the validation and viability of the diamond field emission technology," said Dr. Zvi Yaniv, SIDT's president and COO, "and is an important step toward demonstrating a high resolution large area color video display. We are in the lifetime testing phase of our lamps and we know they currently last several hundred hours with luminance of up to 10,000 fL. We are working on verifiable proof of a 10,000 hour lifetime capability."
The current demonstration model, completed a month ahead of schedule, is in operation at SIDT's Austin facility.

And then there was news of a proprietary break-thru back in early 1997: SI Diamond's FEPET Subsidiary Announces Proprietary Technical Breakthrough New Process Advances Flat Panel Display Prototyping

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- SI Diamond Technology, Inc.
(Nasdaq: SIDT) announced today that its subsidiary, Field Emission Picture Element Technology, Inc. ("FEPET"), has achieved a major breakthrough with the development of its process to pattern carbon films using normaln microelectronic processes without obstructing the electron emission qualities of these films. This proprietary technical breakthrough will allow the manufacturing of flat panel displays using carbon film as the cathode emitters. The patterning will be particularly useful in the triode mode that is necessary for matrix-addressed displays. This is the first time that carbon film has been patterned with such great success and without obstructing its electronic emission properties.
FEPET will use this breakthrough to further its field emission technology projects for large screen display applications, which include the company's collaborative efforts with ISE Electronics and Noritake Co., Inc. "This is the result I was hoping for when I initially invested in this company," said Marc W. Eller, chairman and chief executive officer of SI Diamond. "The outstanding efforts and contributions of our dedicated technical and scientific team are finally coming to fruition." "This is a wonderful technological breakthrough," said Zvi Yaniv, president and chief operating officer of the company. "Combining our high quality carbon films having emission site density of over 250,000/cm2 with this new process will allow us to further advance in prototyping various flat panel displays utilizing our proprietary technology. Our team is working beautifully in overcoming the barriers to developing successful field emission devices."

Then, towards the end of 1997 there was two news announcements about two big Asian electronics companies linking up in a partnership with little 'ol SIDT. And then here of late there was that $5 Million provided in a non-exclusive manner to SIDT. Additionally we have this from today(July 7, 1999):

Now this MAY explain recent days activity. After all, there's an old saying......."Nothing attracts a crowd, like a crowd." Heh! Still, underneath it all something must be going on to warrant the initial attraction, eh?

Bottom Line? SIDT is an extreme speculation, and has been so since 1994. But despite all the ups-n-downs and controversy galore, if you review their history you'll find they've been making progress, albeit at a snails pace. Are things finally about the pay off for them? Perhaps. But don't put any monies down that you cannot afford to lose. And remember to ask yerself this question from time to time. The question? Don'tcha just luuuuuuv speculating. ;-)
